There are lots of ways to get fit as a family: go for walks, fix healthy meals, play outside, etc. A new idea for family fitness is roller derby.
Roller derby workouts are an exercise trend that has been featured on newscasts and newspapers across the country. These are usually geared towards women, but families living in the Webster, Texas area can now enjoy the sport together.
Norma Dolan, Coach Choppin Block, says part of the inspiration to start a derby league in Webster was to create a family-friendly workout.
"I want to teach the game to younger players, and get them interested in playing a family-friendly game," she says.
Beginning Friday, March 1, adults and children can register for the Rant N Rave Rollers at Funcity Sk8, 1500 North Texas Avenue. There will be an adult coed league for those 18 and older. Children seven to 17 can register for the junior league, which will be divided according to weight class. Adults will need a valid driver's license, and children will need proof of age and a parent or legal guardian. Registration also includes signing up for USA Roller Sports insurance, which will cover skaters during practices and bouts.
When practices begin, Coach Block says skaters will be responsible for providing their own protective equipment. (Click here for a list of required protective gear.) Skates are available to rent at $3 a practice until players buy their own. There will be an equipment package offered at registration at a special price. For those who prefer to purchase their own gear, details on proper equipment and fit will be provided.
