On Easter Sunday, Maghan Moynihans's pit bull mix Capone escaped their Fitchburg home without his collar on. Though Moynihan immediately called animal control that morning, Capone was put down within 48 hours, according to WHDH.
Moynihan stated that she had called and left a message with “Susie”, the Fitchburg animal control officer, Sunday morning but did not hear back until Tuesday morning. By then, it was too late. The officer on duty requested she come in and identify Capone's body.
The family was devastated and lost it when they had to view his lifeless body. Now they want answers and the responsible parties to be fired.
At first, animal control claimed he had bitten another dog in the kennel but later recanted that reason. Moynihan believes the regular animal control officer “Susie” was not in the office at the time Capone was put down.
The Fitchburg police department and the State Department of Agricultural Resources are investigating.
