Undefeated lightweight rising star Mercito "No Mercy" Gesta (24-0-1, 12 KOs) stopped by dBoxing Source Radio show together with his father Anecito Gesta this past week to talk about their plans for the future and their inspiring reunion.
The 24-year-old Mercito spent the holidays in his hometown of Mandaue City, Cebu where he caught up with old friends and family and some r&r, as well as train with his original trainer, his father Anecito.
After two months back home, Mercito made good of his promise to his father and brought him back with him to San Diego where he currently is based. Anercito will be helping out with Mercito's training and keep him focused as he aims to step things up with his career in 2012.
"It's a beautiful thing," said Gesta's co-manager and co-trainer Vince Parra, who has been a mentor to him since moving to San Diego. "His dad is a great guy and we get along well. We'll be working together in camp and I think it'll help Mercito a lot."
"It's really important for me, especially right now that I'm getting close to the top," Mercito told this scribe. "My dad knows my style, because I started as a kid with him, so it's really important for my quest for a title fight. He's good with technique and study opponents well. That's important, especially when it comes to a title fight. I'm just so happy right now," added Mercito.
The two have kept in touch through Skype and Facebook since Mercito left Cebu in 2006 to pursue boxing in the US. Often breaking down fight strategy and evaluating things to improve on, Anecito can now be more hands-on and help Mercito every day, and most importanly, provide that invaluable insight and familiar steadying voice.
"I'm happy that I'm here now with my son to help with his training," Anecito said on the show. "Right now I want to see Mercito improve more on his stamina and make sure he does all the things I advised him to do like finishing off his opponent once he hurts him."
A fighter himself, Anecito doesn't just train Mercito, but also spars with him as well and is a full-fledged martial artist. Fighting may be a profession or a passion to many, but to the Gestas, it's "family business".
