Waco, Texas has the small town feeling while also offering all the amenities of a large metropolitan city.  Here in Waco we are blessed to have so many options available to help teach and entertain our children.

The outdoor activities available for your enjoyment in Waco include a tour through scenic Cameron park zoo.  After a leisurely stroll through the zoo you and your family could pay a visit to the grounds of Cameron Park. In the park you can do such things as learn about wildflowers during an educational tour through the park.  This wildflower preserve has winding paths open all year long, and is as pretty as a picture from March through June. Or you and your family can play a game of Disc Golf on the 18 hole course. It's free and open year-round.

If you enjoy history and fossils swing your family by the new Mammoth site park in Bosqueville, Texas.  Bosqueville is a small area on the outskirts of Waco.  This park offers a once in a lifetime view of mammoth remains and behavior.

 Also available outside in Waco is Lion’s Park.  At Lion's Park, children can ride on a miniature train, play putt-putt, drive a go-kart, or ride on a bumper boat. For more information on the activities available at the park you can call (254) 772-4340.

In downtown Waco, across the Brazos river, you and your children can stroll across the wooden slats of Waco's Suspension Bridgeand imagine how it was when cowboys drove their cattle across it way back in 1870.   For small children this Examiner suggests the use of a stroller across the bridge for basic safety reasons. 

Just a few short miles from the Waco suspension bridge lies Baylor University.  Baylor hosts a number of possibly family and kid friendly activities.  Outside on the University campusyou can see Baylor's bear mascots romp and play at the Bear Plaza on the Baylor University Campus, located at 1200 S. 5th St.

Then the central Texas heat becomes too much to handle take heart that Waco boasts five neighborhood Spray Parks.  These parksare located throughout Waco at locations such as Cameron Park, Kendrick Park, Chapel Park, Dewey Park and Mountainview Park.  These locations offer a welcoming wet splash to anyone willing to press the "water" button. The parks are free of charge and open during daylight hours. If water fun is one of your families favorite past times, then the Waco Water Park is the coolest place to be this summer for kids of all ages. Two towering water slides and two pools provide a great escape from the central Texas summer heat.  

When the heat becomes so much that even a dip in the water won’t cool you down there are also tons of indoor activities to take part in here in Waco.  For instance, the Art Center Waco has fun hands-on activities for the "child in all of us". Art Center Waco takes visitors around the world with Islamic calligraphy, Japanese origami, Turkish paper making, and French valentine making. What a wonderful cultural experience for children and families alike!

If sports is your thing, then stop by and pay a visit to the Texas Sports Hall of Fame.  This locationis a great place to learn about a favorite team or player. Interactive displays throughout the Hall of Fame provide the opportunity for patrons to match stride, height, hand and shoe size to those of an average professional player. Answers to a sports trivia quiz can be found throughout the Hall of Fame.

For stories and wonderful art stop byt the Armstrong Browning Library on Baylor’s camus.  At this library you can learn about the legendary Pied Piper. Robert Browning, the library’s namesake, composed the popular poem for Willie Macready, a bedridden 10 year-old to read and illustrate. The original pencil sketches drawn by Willie, and the stained glass window depicting the story can be seen at the library.   Also located at Baylor is the Maybourn Museum. 

Kids of all ages will find something to discover at the Mayborn Museum Complex. There are themed discovery rooms which allow kids of all ages to try on clothing from around the world, scrape skins and grind corn like Native Americans, stand inside a beating heart, or work on science experiments. There is a giant bubble for kids to stand inside of, a current table and great optical illusions.  This is a location that kids and adults can both enjoy.

Here in Central Texas Dr Pepper is a staple.  If you are a fan, swing by the Dr Pepper Museum.  This museumis the home of the world's oldest major soft drink. The first floor contains a replica of the drug store where Dr Pepper was invented as well as an animatron of pharmacist Dr Charles Alderton telling the story of its invention. The interactive exhibits which are designed for younger audiences are fun and educational..

 As you can see, there is no shortage of family friendly locales and entertainment options in our own little town of Waco.  Take a few extra minutes and plan an outing for yur family right here in your own hometown.  Your kids will love it!
