"I have been reading your web site most of the afternoon. My husband’s grandmother was born on Hazelwood Avenue in Squirrel Hill in 1879. I have been trying to read anything I can about Squirrel Hill. Their surname was Schmeltz. I believe they lived in Peebles in 1860’s, Then Pittsburgh annexed Peebles."
Every day emails arrive from folks with grandparents, great grand parents, great great grand parents, etc. from Pittsburgh. Generations of descendants of people who passed through the doorway to America - The Portal of Pittsburgh.

"My understanding is that they had a big farm there. Someone told me that it was called Schmeltz’s field. I visited a couple of times in the seventies. They had a big three story house that I think they are tearing down now. I wished I had asked more question’s when I could have. I think they went to church at Turner’s. I enjoyed reading your story about Turner’s graveyard."
Please join me as we begin our search for what was known as Schmeltz's field.
