False Alarm! Shane Black confirms that next Predator film is a sequel.

Yesterday, it was announced that the Predator franchise would be gaining a new film. The reports came flying out stating that the next installment to this sci-fi franchise would be a reboot, and Iron Man 3 director Shane Black would both write and direct. While Black's involvement is true, there seems to be one detail that is incorrect. Thanks to Collider, it turns out that the next film in the Predator franchise is not reboot but in fact a sequel.

In a exclusive with the site, Black told Collider that he has no intention of rebooting the franchise. The Kiss, Kiss, Bang, Bang director put it best why he thinks continuing the franchise is better oppose to restarting it.

“As far as Fred and I are concerned anyway,” Black said, adding “Why start over, when you’ve all this rich mythology yet to mine?

The exclusive report goes on as Shane Black points out his feelings for reboots and what he believes needs to be done for this upcoming film.

Black said he doesn’t like reboots generally, but can “really get behind inventive sequels”, noting that he likes “the idea of expanding and exploring the existing Predator mythology, rather than hitting the restart button.”

So rather then restarting the franchise, Black believes there is more to explore in the world of Predator, and because of his belief about reboot and sequels, the next installment in this series could be something different. Shane Black does bring a good point. While the Predator has been associated in five films, there is still plenty of paths to explore in this franchise. We know a little on the Predator's culture, but we have never seen their home planet. The Predator has been seen both on Earth and off world, but has the franchise has never taken in the distant future ( or even the distant past for that matter). These are just some ideas and there are plenty more to choose from. The point is, there are plenty of opportunities for the Predator franchise to continue with sequels, and hopefully Shane Black can create a inventive continuation.

What do you think about this news? Are you glad the next Predator film is a sequel or did you want to see a reboot? Feel free to state your opinion in the comments below.
