Jimmy Fallon hosted the Emmy Award telecast on Sunday, and did an appealing job.  The "Glee"-esque opening number of Bruce Springsteen's "Born To Run" that included Jimmy leading cast members from that musical series, plus Jon Hamm, Tina Fey, Jorge Garcia (!), and Joel McHale (!) singing and dancing their butts off in the most energetic opening I've seen at an award show in years.  Eat your heart out, Tony Awards (Okay, maybe not- you won an Emmy, too)!

Fallon had hits and misses during rest of the live broadcast, but mostly kept it flowing.  The hits: The joke during the mini monologue, "NBC asked a host of late night to come to Los Angeles to host another show. What could possibly go wrong?" (Cue to shot of Conan O'Brien in audience).  Another bit that worked was Jimmy doing more impressive impressions for a musical tribute to three series that just ended- "Lost", "24", and "Law & Order".  Fallon also received a huge laugh when he introduced the similarly attired, Tom Selleck, as his real father, then gave the "Magnum P.I" a giant hug.  The misses: Sorry, but although the idea to have Fallon's Twitter followers write intros for the presenters was unique and well-intended, the concept fell flat.  The somewhere in between hit and miss:  Fallon as the strolling minstrel wandering through the audience with an acoustic guitar, singing two or three line intros with the likes of Kim Kardashian, Julianna Margulies, and Stephen Colbert.

Winners of the 2010 Emmy Awards in the late night spectrum of the Variety, Music, and Comedy categories are:

Outstanding Series: "The Daily Show with Jon Stewart"

Outstanding Writing: "The Colbert Report"

Outstanding Costumes; "Jimmy Kimmel Live!"

Outstanding Creative Achievement in Interactive Media Non-Fiction and Outstanding Short Form Picture Editing:  "Late Night with Jimmy Fallon"

The best late night moment from all the nominated series was not on the primetime telecast, but presented at the "Creative Arts Emmy Awards" last Saturday instead.  Therefore, it's a shame that most of the viewers did not get to see the montage of writer nominees because those are always done with the most humor year after year.  The highlight of this year's was when the writing team from "The Tonight Show with Conan O'Brien" were listed with the visual of their names on job applications.
