Falling Skies was honored with a panel and screening at Paley Center last night, and after the screening, Noah Wyle, Moon Bloodgood, Colin Cunningham, Sarah Sanguin Carter, Mark Verheiden, Darryl Frank, and Justin Falvey were on hand for a Q&A.
For those who couldn't attend, Paley Center sent out live tweets about what the panelists talked about, and one of them contained spoilers about an upcoming episode:
"The panel reveals there are some new aliens on the way in episode 7. #FallingSkies #PaleyLiveLA"
Who are these new aliens? How will they factor into the scheme of the show and the apparent hierarchy among the aliens? Recent episodes have shown that aliens aren't the only enemies the 2nd Mass has—they also have to keep an eye on humans as well. Clayton, a member of the 7th Mass, came to the 2nd Mass with news of an upcoming attack and an offer to take the children to a safe haven. After much deliberation, Tom decided it was a good idea, and the episode ended with the children going with Clayton—but he has made a deal with the skitters and used information Pope provided. The panel also addressed aspects of the show such as that:
"Colin: What's interesting is that even though there is only 2% of humanity left, they still have different goals. #FallingSkies #PaleyLiveLA"
That's even true just in the 2nd Mass. Tom's goal has always been to rescue Ben from the skitters, but he has also become a vital member of the resistance as a fighter. Now that he has Ben back, his goal is keeping his family together and safe, which means fighting these aliens. Weaver and Tom have had some tension because of their different view points: Weaver looks at it from a military perspective, while Tom, as a history professor, looks at it from the civilians' point of view. Noah Wyle has even taken a look at the series from a perspective fitting of his character:
"Noah is intrigued with these characters being architects of a new society, and what they keep from the past. #FallingSkies #PaleyLiveLA"
Meanwhile, Pope clashed with the 2nd Mass and escaped the first chance he got—but he ended up a prisoner once again, this time of Clayton's. Clayton has made a deal with the skitters, and he brings them children as part of that deal.
The panel also talked about the skitters:
"Mark: We talked a lot about how to treat the skitters. Do we torture them? Spielberg said that's not this show. #FallingSkies #PaleyLiveLA"
"Noah recalls a night a bunch of grown men were standing around discussing 'Well how thick is a skitter's skull?' #FallingSkies #PaleyLiveLA"
The 2nd Mass did have a skitter as their "prisoner of war," and while at first Anne was against harming it, instead wanting to try to communicate, she was the one to kill it while they were figuring out a way for Hal to make the "silent kill" while rescuing Ben. However, others in the 2nd Mass weren't above hurting it.
