Tracey Chevalier had already ridden the crest of fame with her first book, “Girl with a Pearl Earring” an international hit. Now she raises that bar even higher with her second book, “Falling Angels” a moody Victorian piece set in early twentieth century England. The main story centers around two families; the Coleman’s and the Waterhouse’s who meet in a cemetery during a visit where the families have adjoining plots. They begin to form an uneasy relationship brought about with the blossoming relationship between their two daughters and a grave digger’s son. The stories unfold through a series of short narrative diary entries using their inner most thoughts to interweave stories involving dysfunction, neglect, and infidelity with an additional subplot drawn around the British suffragette movement.

Leave it to Chevalier to draw upon her previous experience in writing dramatic period drama's using the full range of her writing talent to once again create in very convincing detail the tragic shortcomings of the Coleman’s and the Waterhouse’s. Only a handful of writers can deliver on the promise of writing a good first novel then succeeding on writing a better second one. Falling Angels by Tracy Chevalier (pages 321).
