Heavy snow fell throughout the night and the majority of the day in the Kansas City area. Sleet and freezing rain were mixed in at various times throughout the snowstorm. Depending on which part of town is in question, anywhere from eight to twelve inches of new snow is on the ground. This is the second major snowstorm to hit the area in less than a week.
Because of the heavy weight of this snowfall, numerous limbs have fallen and power lines are down in various parts of the metro area. Large numbers of homes and businesses are without power. Some have had their power restored; but many are still in the dark and without heat. Downed power lines are dangerous, as they may still have electricity flowing through them, even if they are on the ground or dangling precariously. Caution should be taken if any are located. Tree limbs may be buried in the deep snow, so beware.
This heavy snow also took its toll on the roof of the Eagles Club on Main Street in Belton, Missouri, this morning. The roof collapsed on the building which formerly housed the Hy-Klas grocery store. Luckily, there were no injuries as no one was in the building when the collapse occurred.
The majority of schools were closed today and most are expected to be closed tomorrow. Children will be out sledding, playing in the snow, and may not be observant to vehicles in the area. Dogs and cats have a tendency to wander down the middle of the road when snow is piled up along the streets as it is now. Please be on the lookout for children and pets when driving.
Many acts of kindness have been cited throughout the Kansas City area, due to these two snowstorms. People have helped neighbors shovel or plow their driveways. Strangers have helped push or pull vehicles out of ditches. Volunteers have helped clear sidewalks at churches and other places. Some have provided groceries to friends in need. Psalm 40: 5-6 says, "Happy those whose trust is the Lord, who turn not to idolatry or to those who stray after falsehood. How numerous, O Lord, my God, you have made your wondrous deeds! And in your plans for us there is none to equal you. Should I wish to declare or tell them, too many are they to recount," (The New American Bible). How wonderful that people all over Kansas City are allowing God's great love to be shown through their kindnesses to others.
The temperatures are forecast to drop overnight. Icy conditions are likely for in the morning. More snow is falling in various parts of town, too. Please be careful when out and about.
