Fallen leaves: Magnificent color brings dangerous travel

Photo by J. Taylor - Highly used intersection on the Main Line - Dangerous!

Those beautiful falling leaves in the Delaware Valley are making the roads slick, dangerous, and downright treacherous.  The morning news is reporting a high rate of morning fender benders during rush hour. Slow down; driving on wet leaves presents the same danger as driving through deep water that puddles on the roads; and you should drive on leaves exactly the same way; cautiously, slowly and without jamming on the brakes when you’re driving over them. There’s no telling how many leaves are underneath the tires; and once the car starts sliding, there’s nothing left to do but go with the flow.  Watch turning corners and breaking too fast on side streets.

Last year in Paoli, a new teenage driver was traveling to school, turned a corner in a residential neighborhood at a normal rate of speed, she skid, her tires locked, she panicked, lost control of the car, put her foot on the accelerator, and fishtailed directly into a resident’s driveway speeding straight into their unopened garage. The car ended up with the driver the car completely inside the resident’s garage; directly plowing through to the other end. Of course, everything in the garage was smashed like an accordion.  It took emergency crews to remove her from the car; and luckily, she was not physically hurt and there were cars in the garage.

Make sure you keep up with leaf removal on your property so that large piles don’t build up and blow into the streets. It’s also kind to the neighbors. If you see large piles of leaves in the street, volunteer in the community by removing them. Also, don’t rake, mow, or blow your leaves out in the street; put them in the compost or bag them up and follow your Township, County, or Public Works Department instructions for the disposal of leaves in your area. Remember, wet leaves and wet roads are dangerous; don’t leave the leaves.
