Fans of supernatural shows can often be a picky bunch, but luckily “Sleepy Hollow” (which premiered last night on Fox) should please even the most finicky of viewers. The pilot was a fast paced (though exposition heavy) treat that featured an unlikely, yet highly appealing duo.
Ichabod Crane (the wonderful Tom Mison) fighting in the Revolutionary War, when he comes face-to-face with mysterious foe in a red coat. The soldier appears to be immune to bullets, which forces Ichabod to cut off his head. Flash forward 250 years to present day Sleepy Hollow, where Lt. Abbie Mills (Nicole Beharie, a perfect match for Mison) plans to leave for the FBI. But all that changes when Ichabod shows up town, along with the mysterious horseman who is back to his old tricks. Somehow the two are connected in more ways than one.
Like most pilot episodes, “Sleepy Hollow” had to fit a lot into one hour in order to explain what was going on. While some of it was a bit overbearing, the chemistry between the two leads really made the show worthwhile. Mison and Beharieh shared an easy going chemistry that brought a nice contrast to the dark story, and somehow made it believable that these two would work together. Another pleasant surprise was the humor, which kept “Hollow” from taking itself too seriously. Overall, “Sleepy Hollow” is one town that could be worthy of a second visit.
