Navigating the fall runways and translating those looks into your wardrobe can be an overwhelming experience. We caught up with wardrobe styling expert, Catherine Joubert for tips and insider tricks on how you can create your own autumn-inspired ensemble.
From runway to your closet: Runway trends should be used as inspiration when a trend makes sense for your body type, age, profession, and personal style. For instance, the menswear trend is a big one this fall. Confident shoulders, sharp trousers, dark neutral tweeds, houndstooth and simple lines. To make this trend work, it's best to find one or two menswear inspired pieces and pair them with more feminine items to balance the look rather than looking androgynous with an all menswear from head to toe look.
Go-to item for fall: A nice silk top (not polyester!) with a fun print that has many of the season's colors that broaden the mix and match options. Wear it short or 3/4 sleeves or, even sleeveless with a flattering shape that's not too boxy, but also not too fitted. A cut that emphasizes your shape and shows off your waistline is a win-win every time. This silk top is versatile and can be adapted to the various seasons with minor adjustments. During the summer it can be worn by itself when it's warm and with a lightweight cotton cardigan for cooler nights. For fall, layer it with a heavier sweater or a structured blazer.
Ankle boots: The fall ankle boot comes in a variety of styles - from the pointed toe wedge and a pointed toe heel, to a round toe stacked heel. Choose what works best for you and your feet. The pointed toe versions tend to elongate your leg, but they also can fit a little narrower. If you have a wide foot, opt for a rounded toe. For petites worried about ankle boots making their legs look shorter, this is only true mostly when wearing a skirt or dress with a bootie. To be safe, wear your ankle boots with a slim jean or pant. But if you really like the skirt/dress and ankle boot look, choose a style that is cut low on the ankle rather than higher.
Layer, layer, layer! Lightweight breathable natural fibers underneath, warmer thicker layers on top. A fitted and cropped denim or leather jacket is always a failsafe way to go from day to evening in a stylish and timeless way.
