As we are surrounded by falling leaves and the colors of red, orange, yellow, and shades of brown, announcing the arrival of the autumn season, our thoughts turn to crafts, country and artful living, and thoughts of home and comfort creations. There are many people who have turned their creativity into careers, both full time and part-time. People with time and talents have found so many creative and fulfilling ways to turn their love of the arts, crafts, retailing, and beauty, nutrition, fitness, and homemaking industries into vibrant and abundant careers. Below are some of the many ways that are available to people who wish to make an extra income by turning to the arts.
It may seem that the opportunities for earning an income in online retailing have passed, but in reality, there is an opportunity for organized, efficient people with new and newer/gently used items to sell them online. All of us have items around our home that we no longer need or want. For items that are in original packaging, or branded clothing or barcoded items such as CDs or DVDs, it is a simple process to become an online retailer at Ebay.com or Amazon.com. The site Etsy.com allows people to create stores of handmade or vintage items. It is easy to first become a seller and then a retailer on these sites.
For people that prefer the more tradition retail environment of working in a shop, there are numerous retail opportunities available, particularly as the economy continues to improve. Working at retailers such as A.C. Moore or Michaels, Home Depot, commercial photography/art studio/printing or gallery, or another store, may provide the ability to work with arts, crafts, or other creative outlets. In addition, opening your own quilting or knitting shop, clothing consignment shop DIY crafts store, or yoga, dance, or sporting clothing shop may also be a possibility for traditional retailing.
Independent Retail Consultant/Representative
There are also home based retailing business opportunities available as consultants or independent business owners in beauty, specialty food items, home goods, hand-bags, and other types of product lines. Some of the more well known companies are listed below. For people that want to pursue a part-time income, and really enjoy a particular product line, this may be the opportunity for you. Research the products and the specific sales agreements that these and other companies offer. You may find a line of home goods, beauty and health care, or other items that you really want to learn about and become a home based retailer, through hostessing and other direct marketing methods.

Celebrate Performing Arts and Fitness
The performing arts, through music, dance, theater, and stage offer an outlet for the trained artist to participate and develop a full or part time career in the arts. There are many opportunities to become a performing artist or a sports/fitness instructor at a local YMCA, dance school, or fitness center. See my recent Examiner.com article entitled Fit In The City, 2013 for more details.
Give Back To The Community
For those who may not be drawn to retail, but enjoy artistic outlets, consider attending community events or organizing/planning for clubs, neighborhoods, township, city, or county events. You may also wish to participate in local government parks and recreation activities, be a hobbyist, attend trunk/trade shows, or other associations that bring people together to enjoy specific arts and craft activities. This season, as the leaves change color, there are many ways to explore creative outlets, including taking a class at a local night school, or becoming a patron of the arts. Explore the world around you, and you may be surprised by arts!
