With the groundhog, and the National Weather Service, reminding us there are still a few more weeks of winter, local yarn shops in the area are doing their best to encourage their patrons to keep warm by marking down some favorite yarns. Late winter is also a great time for new knitters to learn and practice their latest craft, and buying high-quality yarn at a discount is the perfect way to do it.

Below is a roundup of local yarn shops and their current sales or deals to receive discounts and prizes. Contact the store via telephone, website, or facebook to determine their hours and restrictions:

Woolly Lamb: This northwest side gem, opened for a decade and exclusively selling Bergere de France to its Chicago-area customers, is in the middle of a weekend-long 20% off sale throughout the store. For today and tomorrow, customers can continue to receive a 20% discount on Bergere de France, Berroco, and Cascade yarns, in addition to a selection of patterns and accessories as well. The Woolly Lamb is located at 6007 N Nina in Chicago.

Montoya Fiber Studio: Today is the last day to save 30% off of the regular price on a selection of yarns moved to the glass sale bins at the front of the store. Located in Evanston, Montoya Fiber Studio is a steady contributor to charities in the area and encourages their customers to use their yarns for charity projects. Montoya is making room for the spring yarns arriving daily.

The Nook: This needlework and snack shop in downtown Lisle is hosting a needle tasting with Knitter's Pride today, from 2:00p.m. to 6:00p.m., including discounts and door prizes. The needle tasting does include crochet hooks, and their back room has a large area of sale yarns called the Bargain Nook, always marked down by at least 20% off the original price.

Le Mouton Rouge: If you are in the far southwest suburbs, Le Mouton Rouge Knittery in Morris is giving away a door prize today, with an entry for walking through the door and an additional entry for every ten dollars spent in the store today. The store is open from 10:00a.m. to 5:00p.m. on Saturdays and is located right in the heart of downtown Morris.

String Theory Yarn Company: Out in Glen Ellyn, String Theory Yarn Company is hosting a trunk show today, courtesy of Happy Go Lucky Yarns. The trunk show is hand-painted by Julie, who is also an instructor at the store, and she produces her yarn in small batches specifially for her customers.
