Fall hiking in the Uinta Mountains, watch your step

October 5, 2013

There is still time to hike the trails in the local canyons of Salt Lake City, but you might want to take some extra precautions. Above about 600 feet, the ridges have received snow as of lately. During the day time those trails are going to be muddy and in the early morning and late afternoon to evening they are going to slippery with icy conditions. Take the necessary precautions like wearing appropriate clothing for the cold and slippery conditions. While hiking recently in Parley’s canyon, special athletic shoes with spikes on the soles were noted, along with hiking poles.

The fall leaves are a fantastic motivation to get out of the car in the higher elevations, so the leaves might tempt you to stray from the trail, but don’t do it. Stay on the trails and stay with your hiking group or partner. The muddy or slippery conditions might slow you down from your normal hiking rhythm but you will find your heart rate to increase non-the-less.

So go hike, enjoy the fall colors and be safe for another day to enjoy your hiking.
