In an exclusive interview with the Long Island Hair Care Examiner on Thursday, celebrity hairstylist and Emmy nominee Dennis Parker, famous for his work on “True Blood”, revealed his expert opinion about fall and winter hair color trends, dished on Miley Cyrus, and provided advice for the up-and-coming cosmetologist.
From working as the Department Head Hairstylist on “True Blood” for two seasons to currently styling the tresses for ABC's “Mistresses”, Dennis Parker is an accomplished stylist, with two Primetime Emmy nominations for his work.
In an exclusive interview with the Long Island Hair Care Examiner via email, Dennis graciously answered questions about “True Blood”, Miley Cyrus’ pigtail look, upcoming hair color trends and his journey from beauty school to Emmy nods.
LIHCE: How do you feel about the news that “True Blood” will meet its true death having been the onset stylist?
DP: I did the fourth and fifth season only of “True Blood” and feel lucky to have been part of an amazing show, cast and crew...Truly Blessed.
LIHCE: Miley Cyrus is growing out her locks? Her stylist is letting the top grow while keeping the back and sides cropped. Would you suggest the same for others who are growing short hair out?
DP: I really like Miley Cyrus's hairstyle. I think it works whether you’re girl or a guy. I love everything androgynous, plus it’s a great way to grow out a short haircut and keep an edgy look.
LIHCE: What do you think the next big hair color trend will be, specifically on the runway for NYFW and in the spring and upcoming fall?
DP: I think deeper, darker and richer colors with softer lightening of the hair and soft highlights, blended around the face softening the bolder Ombre look of summer is going to be popular this winter. I also feel that whatever you do, that you should ‘own it’, and it will work and look amazing.
LIHCE: Lastly, as a working hairstylist, as well as a beauty writer, I have received many questions on entering the beauty biz as a cosmetologist. Could you briefly summarize your beginnings to your Emmy nominations?
DP: After working in salons after beauty school and building a foundation in styling, I decided that what I really wanted to do was work in film and television. I started working Indie films and eventually doing soaps and other film projects. Most of my work has been in episodic television. I’m working on an amazing show called “Chasing Life” starring Italia Ricci. It has been so much fun, yet long hours, but definitely worth it because the cast and crew are so much fun, and we always end up with an amazing result, which is good television. I always dreamed of working in show business and sometimes I have to pinch myself that I’m living my dream. I think the most important thing is to stay focused on your dream and visualize yourself doing what you want to do!
