Fall for the Arts at PlayhouseSquare

“The arts are not just for those who go on to become professional artists. Research shows that girls and boys, young men and women who have art classes are more likely to be engaged in their classes, attend school, achieve better test scores, and graduate.”  - www.whitehouse.gov

The Community Engagement & Education Department at PlayhouseSquare is hosting its annual Fall for the Arts evening of professional development for Northeast Ohio educators of grades Pre-K through 8 on Wednesday, October 26 from 4 - 8 p.m. in the Idea Center® at PlayhouseSquare (1375 Euclid Avenue). The registration fee is $10.

This year’s Fall for the Arts features a series of 60-minute workshops that provide educators with standards-based lesson plans and ideas to use in their classrooms. Topics include connecting the arts to literature, science, digital storytelling, and readers’ theater. Local artists as well as WVIZ/PBS ideastream, Great Lakes Science Center, Shaker Lakes Nature Center and the Beck Center will present.

The President of the United States, Barack Obama, recognizes the importance of the arts to young people. In May of 2011, “The President's Committee on the Arts and the Humanities (PCAH) announced the release of its landmark report Reinvesting in Arts Education: Winning America's Future Through Creative Schools.” The report combined 18 months of research via various agencies and came to the firm conclusion that education is one of our nation’s most important investments, and that an education without the arts is incomplete.

“We look forward to helping educators find new ways to integrate the arts into their classrooms,” stated Colleen Porter, Director of Community Engagement & Education. “Arts integration captures student attention, increases understanding and provides a creative outlet in the classroom that is beneficial for both teachers and students.”

PlayhouseSquare understands its vital role as an educator in our community, and is committed to providing arts learning opportunities of the highest quality to enrich the lives of students, families, teachers and adults.

Fall for the Arts starts with a cocktail reception followed by a series of 1-hour arts-integration workshops. Teachers will rotate through three interactive sessions and leave with standards-based lesson plans.

This unique opportunity is appropriate for classroom teachers (PreK-8), arts specialists, administrators and teaching artists. Refreshments will be served. Information and registration is available online at www.playhousesquare.org/educators or by calling 216-348-7909.
