Living in the Twin Cities can mean you are a city slicker or it could mean that you get out on the farm. You mean there is a farm in the Twin Cities? The Three Rivers Park District operates a year round farm in Minnetrista! Gale Woods Farm provides many things as well as an up close and personal farm experience.
Every Saturday morning through October from 9-Noon you have a chance to explore the farm by assisting a Gale Woods Farmer with chores and various other seasonal farm activities. Bring the family as long as the family is age two and up! There is a nominal cost for this at $4/person so plan accordingly. Do not forget, this is a farm so do not wear your absolute best clothes to participate in this fun time.
Now if doing chores does not seem like something that you would do, perhaps the Celebrate the Harvest event on Saturday, October 8, from 9AM-5PM and Sunday, October 9, from 10AM-4PM would be more up your alley. This annual event will feature fiber artwork and farm products from more than 30 local vendors. At the same time, check out the amazing skills of border collies and their trainers at the Star of the North Stock Dog Trials. If that is not enough, enjoy the fall colors from a wagon ride! Observe world record holder Doug Rathke shear sheep on Saturday and enjoy a llama show on Sunday. Want to cook like those good farm chefs? Check out the chef demonstration on cooking and preserving the bounty of the harvest. If that is not enough, tour the gardens and orchard, tasting the bounty the farm has produced. Make a wool craft to take home and enjoy farm games for the kids. All of this for only $5/person.
Maybe you would rather see the scary side of the farm! Entertaining garden walks with the Mad Scientist await your presence on Saturday, October 29, from 5-9 PM. Bring the whole family who then can dress in costumes for a night at Gale Woods. Experience the wild walk through the gardens as costumed characters amaze you with their kooky garden creations. Then wait until you see the Mad Scientist along with meeting the farm animals including the owl. Afterwards, relax around the bonfire listening to stories and songs while making craft items or playing games. Pre-registration for this event and get a horse draw wagon ride for only $9! Children under two are admitted free.
