Fall camping tips for LARPers

With autumn approaching, LARPers (live action role players) who game at campsites need to get their camping gear in order for the fall climate. New LARPers also need to be prepared for the diversity of weather that fall can bring.

This list is written with LARPers of moderate climates in mind. Climates vary; plan accordingly.

Helpful items include:

  • Bug spray (if you are camping in a region with ticks, be sure to get a spray that repels them)
  • Several pairs of socks
  • Spare change of shoes
  • Hat and/or hair tie (consider a costume-acceptable item; flourish hair ties with ribbons, etc.)
  • Sunscreen
  • Sleeping bag and blankets
  • Tweezers and first aid kit
  • Flashlight
  • Lip balm
  • Lighter or matches

In some areas of the United States, 'fall' covers a diverse range of temperatures. Whether you live in a temperate climate or the desert, temperatures can drop rapidly with nightfall. It's important to consider this when constructing or collecting costuming for your LARP character.

Need help with layering your costume for night time temperatures? Consider the following:

  • Stockings or pants under dresses and skirts
  • Knee-high boots
  • Cloaks
  • Adapted coats and 'Eskimo coats' for barbarians
  • Out-of-character sleeping arrangements (if available - this can help if you don't have money for additional costume pieces and don't mind turning in a bit early)
  • Hoods and hats
  • Fur or leather (as well as faux fur and faux leather for those with concerns for animals)
  • Detachable sleeves
  • Dressing in layers

When considering costuming, don't forget to think about the environment. Depending on the weather, you could be trudging through leaves or mud. Do you have the appropriate foot gear? Shoes with excellent traction are extremely helpful when it comes to walking on wet leaves.
