Fall 2010 crime fiction conferences entice mystery fans

The number of crime fiction conferences this year shows little sign of diminishing as 2010 nears its close. From September through December, these events continue to provide mystery writers and fans alike with a chance to meet and mingle with others who share their interests.

September 2010

Agatha Christie’s hometown of Torquay, England held its annual Agatha Christie Festival from September 12th-19th. This year’s festival celebrated the 120th anniversary of Christie’s birth.

Washington, D.C.’s 10th National Book Fest took place on the National Mall on September 25th. Mystery writers participating in this annual celebration of literacy and lifelong learning included Ken Follett (Apples Carstairs series, the Piers Roper series and the Pillars of the Earth series), Martha Grimes (Richard Jury series), Karin Slaughter (Grant County series) and Scott Turow (Kindle County series).

October 2010

Bouchercon, the world mystery convention, was held in San Francisco, California from October 14th-17th. Lee Child (Jack Reacher series) was recognized for his Distinguished Contribution to the Genre. Denise Mina (Paddy Meehan series) was the International Guest of Honor; Laurie R. King (Kate Martinelli series, Mary Russell series), the American Guest of Honor; and Maddy Van Hertbruggen, the Fan Guest of Honor. Eddie Muller (Billy Nichols series) was Bouchercon’s Toastmaster.

The International Festival of Authors (IFOA) takes place in Toronto, Canada from October 20th-November 5th. Mystery fiction is highlighted at this event with a series IFOA Noir programs,

Magna Cum Murder will be held at the Horizon Convention Center in Muncie, Indiana from October 29-31, 2010. Historical Mystery writers Charles and Caroline Todd (Ian Rutledge series, Bess Crawford Mysteries) are Guests of Honor.

More than 50 male mystery writers will arrive at the Irvine, California Marriott for Men of Mystery on October 30, 2010. Gregg Hurwitz (Tim Rackley series) and Christopher Rice will speak in the morning session; Don Winslow (Neal Carey series), in the afternoon

November 2010

Society Hill Playhouse in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania will be the site of Noir Con 2010.  Charles Benoit is Keynote Speaker for the November 4th-7th event. Johnny Temple (Akashic Books) will receive the Jay and Deen Kogan Award for Excellence in Publishing. George Pelecanos (Derek Strange and Terry Quinn series) will be honored with of the David L. Goodis Award.

The Tony Hillerman Writer's Weekend will take  place at Inn and Spa at Loretto in Sante Fe, New Mexico from November 11th-13th.  Margaret Coel (Wind River Reservation Mystery series), Judith Van Gieson (Claire Reynier series), Bill O'Hanlon, Valerie Plame Wilson and Christine Barber are among the featured faculty.

Murder and Mayhem in Muskego will be hosted by the Muskego (Wisconsin) Public Library on November 12th-13th. Ridley Pearson (Walt Fleming series, Steel Trapp series) is Guest of Honor.

“Written in Blood,” the 2010 New England Clambake, will be held from November 12-14, 2010 at the Hilton Hotel in Dedham, Massachusetts. In recognition of Special Guest  Charlaine Harris (Sookie Stackhouse series), event festivities will include a Vampire Ball.

December 2010

The Wolfe Pack will hold its 33rd annual Black Orchid Weekend from December 3-5, 2010 in New York City. The winner of the 2010 Nero Wolfe Award will named at the banquet. Nominees include Charles Finch’s The Fleet Street Murders( Charles Lenox Mysteries, book 3), Steve Hockensmith’s Crack in the Lens (Holmes On the Range Mystery,  book 4), and Brad Parks’ Faces of the Gone (Carter Ross Mystery, book 1).
