Fall 2009 Movie Preview

I Can Do Bad
Tyler Perry's upcoming new movie
Just because summer is over doesn't mean that blockbuster films are leaving the theatres. In fact, starting with Halloween, the fall holiday season gets in swing for the movies. This fall, there will be tons of great films to look forward to coming to a theatre near you.

The multi-talented Tyler Perry is returning to the big screen with his latest film I Can Do Bad All By Myself. For fans of his character Madea, she will be making an appearance in this film as well musicians Gladys Knight and Mary J. Blige. The film is based on Perry's 1999 play of the same name. It begins when Madea finds a group of kids looting her house and makes the three of them live with April (Taraji P. Henson), a heavy-drinking woman who has a married boyfriend. After meeting Sandino (Adam Rodriguez), who is renting a room from her, April must decide whether to give up her partying lifestyle to raise the kids and reaffirm her faith. The film's official web site can be accessed here. The film will be released on September 11th.

For those who like comedies and the recent zombie craze, you will love Zombieland, which is to be released on October 2nd. Set on a postapocolyptic earth, the film follows Columbus (Jesse Eisenberg) who is terrified of pretty much everything and Tallahassee (Woody Harrelson) an AK-47 brandishing thug, who must field their way through zombie infested earth to reach the world's last Twinkie. The film also features Bill Murray, Abigail Breslin, Emma Stone, and Amber Heard. The official site can be accessed here.

One of the big trends in movies this fall seems to be films about powerful women. Indie films like The Young Victoria, starring Emily Blunt and Coco Before Chanel, starring Audrey Tautou, are sure to gain some following and, since it is the English-speaking film of the two with an all-star cast, The Young Victoria stands a chance of making the jump from indie to megaplex favorite.

The much anticipated Anna Wintour documentary September Issue also comes to theatres across the country this month, a feautre which will have fashionistas clawing their ways to the ticket booths. A film that is definitely striving for Oscar gold is Amelia, which is set to premiere on October 23rd. Starring Hilary Swank in the title role, the film is a biopic of aviatrix Amelia Earhart, her loves, her flight around the world, and her mysterious disappearance.

A few good movies for the family and for teens are also coming to theatres this fall. Both based on classic children's books, the animated Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs and the surreally animation-live action crossover Where the Wild Things Are both will delight audiences of all ages. Cloudy is the first to come to theatres, premiering on September 18th. Already, Where the Wild Things Are is getting Oscar buzz, which is rather unusual for a "kids movie" in this day and age. The Spike Jonze film based on the famed Maurice Sendak book is set to premier on October 16th.

Several movies aimed at the teen demographic are also on the list to look forward to this fall. From across the pond comes the British film St. Trinian's, based on a cult film and television series. The film is about a school for bad girls that comes close to closing, only for the girls to rally and try to rescue their school. The film stars Rupert Everett, Colin Firth, Stephen Fry, and Mischa Barton.
Youth in Revolt
Cera stars in Youth in Revolt

On October 30th comes Youth In Revolt, a film starring Michael Cera as a teen boy trying to get through his trailer trash parents divorce and lusting after another girl in the neighborhood. The film has a great supporting cast including Steve Buscemi, Ray Liotta, Ari Graynor, and Jean Smart. It seems like another one of Cera's films where he plays a bumbling, nervous teen loser type, but the film is getting some buzz, much of it surrounding Cera's performance in the film.

Coming out on November 13 is The Boat that Rocked, also known as Pirate Radio, which crosses the teen-adult line. The film's plot seems simple enough: eight 60s DJs take a boat out onto international waters so they can broadcast whatever they want. The film stars Bill Nighy, Kenneth Branagh, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Nick Frost, and has a cameo by Emma Thompson. Though fictional, the flim is somewhat based on the story of Radio Caroline.
