"My girlfriend who lives in Canada..."
I think everyone knows this joke well. And if not, there's an amusing song with the above title made by the musical hit Avenue Q in New York City.
Well, the fake girlfriend in Manti Te'o's oddly fascinating case is speaking out over her image being used. According to NBC.com, Diane O'Meara told NBC's Today show Tuesday that Ronaiah Tuiasosopo used pictures of her without her knowledge in creating a fake woman called Lennay Kekua. Te'o asserts he was tricked into an online romance with Kekua and, until last week, believed she died of leukemia in September.
The photos were pulled from the woman's Facebook account. The day Deadspin.com broke the hoax story, she said "I don't think there's anything he could say to me that would fix this," The 23-year-old marketing executive in Los Angeles never spoke with Te'o before this scandal.
In the strange twist of events which boggles many minds, the length of time the two never actually met should have been one the first red flags. Just like in my online dating scam articles, it seems this virtual love affair was pulling Te'o's heart strings - and most likely purse strings.
Te'o himself with speaking out with Katie Couric this Thursday. Don't miss that interview, I'm sure it will be juicy and informative.
