The Better Business Bureau, or BBB, released a new warning to consumers Saturday regarding a fake debt collection scam.
This new warning stems from a debt collection scam in Spokane, Washington. The con begins with a phone call claiming to be from a police officer. The caller tells the victim they owe money and if they do not pay, they will be arrested. The caller claims their name is "Wilkinson".
The caller attempts to be intimidating and threatening. The caller will then leave a phone number to contact. The phone number provided during the call carries a 972 area code, which is the Dallas-Fort Worth area. The person answering the Dallas number provides a fake address and refuses to answer any questions regarding the debt.
The BBB recommends anyone contacted by a fake debt collector to remain calm during the phone call and gather as much information as possible. Ask for proof of the debt, in writing. Police will never contact an individual about a debt without prior knowledge or notice.
Never provide any bank or account information to anyone calling you about a debt you're unfamiliar with.
