Fake braces trend sweeps Southeast Asia by storm

A strange new trend of wearing fake braces is sweeping Southeast Asia, and we’re just a few days into 2013.

In America, wearing braces leads to taunts and teases by peers, especially in high school. But in places like Thailand and Indonesia, it’s all the rage.

According to multiple reports, including the NY Daily News, teens are wearing fake braces in an effort to be at the forefront of fashion.

But like anything that teens seem to do en masse, there are severe consequences, too.

In fact, Vice.com writes about how the fake braces trend has actually led to a few deaths.

“A pair of shoddy braces was blamed for the death of a 17-year-old in the northeast city of Khon Kaen from a thyroid infection, which rapidly progressed to fatal heart failure. Then, in Chonburi, police tied the death of a 14-year-old girl to braces purchased at an illegal open-air stall,” according to Vice.com.

Pretend braces can be put on at home at one’s own convenience. And not only do they come in an array of colors, but different styles and genres too, including “kitty” and “Mickey Mouse.”
