Tennessee State Representative Jeremy Faison (R-Cosby), and State Senator Frank Niceley (R-Strawberry Plains) introduced legislation today, House Bill 10, that would prohibit any Tennessee State funding from being used to confiscate firearms should the federal government outlaw certain weapons now legal, but which could be made illegal under a federal confiscation, law, rule, or executive order that becomes effective after January 1st, 2013 which “imposes restrictions on citizens who lawfully possess or carry firearms in this state; allows the allocation of state or local personnel or property to such regulation or enforcement if federal funding is provided.”
Representative Faison told The Examiner in an exclusive interview Thursday that the legislation isn’t just another gun bill, it is intended as a statement by Tennessee about the limits of federal power. “The founders of our republic understood that the States created the federal government,” Faison said “it seems to me that the child is trying to tell the parents what to do instead of the parents setting the rules for the unruly child.” Faison said he couldn’t think of a better issue for a confrontation with Washington, “I think we are well within our rights to tell Washington that if they are going to confiscate the firearms of law-abiding citizens and violate their constitutional rights, that the State of Tennessee isn’t going to help them pay for it.”
