For the trivia lovers, the term aerobics was initially coined by sports exercise physiologist Kenneth H. Cooper, M.D., founder of the respected Cooper Institute in Dallas, Texas. The verb “aerobic” means “with oxygen.” Dr. Cooper merely added the letter “s” at the end to create the noun “aerobics.” Dr, Coopers groundbreaking 1958 book, “Aerobics” launched the specific exercise method known today as aerobics.
Aerobics exercise defined
Aerobics is a method of physical exercise that produces beneficial changes in the respiratory and circulatory systems through activities that require modest and sustainable increases in oxygen intake.
Contrasting aerobic exercise like jogging with anaerobic activities like sprinting and in some cases strength training, aids in understanding what aerobics is all about. Anaerobic exercise involves short bursts of intense exertion while aerobic exercise involves exercising at a moderate intensity over a relatively prolonged period of time.
Aerobic training exercise examples
According to information at the Cooper Institute website, 41 different exercises have been identified that provide aerobic benefit. The top five activities, listed in order of most benefit include;
- Cross-country skiing

The healthful benefits of aerobics fitness exercises
The American Heart Association recommends regular aerobic exercise (30 minutes or longer of exercise on most days of the week) for most people to achieve better health and fitness. Following the recommendation can play an important role in the prevention of cardiovascular diseases including stroke and heart disease.
The association also claims that studies have shown that regular aerobic exercise helps control blood lipid abnormalities, lowers the risk of diabetes, reduces the incidence of obesity and can help reduce high blood pressure. They say that people who engage in regular physical exercise tend to live longer and also enjoy a better quality of life.
Starting and maintaining a sensible fitness plan involving an aerobic exercise program tailored to individual needs and capabilities can help a person feel and look better, enjoy increased energy levels and experience better overall health.
