Faces of the 2011 Boston Marathon: Alleigh Marre

When the 2011 Boston Marathon begins, the cameras will be focused on American favorites Ryan Hall and Kara Goucher. However, there are over 26,000 other runners that will follow in their footsteps, going through the Wellesley College scream tunnel, up Heartbreak Hill, through Kenmore Square and down Boylston Street.

Every week leading up to the marathon one of these faces in the crowd will be profiled. Additionally, each runner that is featured will receive a free case of HINT Water to help them stay hydrated through their training, especially after those long runs (some background on HINT is below). This week’s face is the crowd is Alleigh Marré, a 22-year old living in Boston, but originally from New York. She also writes for BostInnovation.com, and you can follow her Boston experience through her blog and on Twitter (@alleighmarre).

First Boston?

Alleigh will be running her first Boston Marathon in 2011.

Getting There:

Alleigh got her Boston Marathon number by running for a charity. She’s raising money for Playworks, a national nonprofit organization that provides schools with recess programs and trained coaches to make recess a constructive time for kids to learn and get exercise.

Why Boston?

Alleigh has been an athlete her entire life, playing varsity sports in high school and at Emerson College in Boston. However, while in college her sports career was put on hold when she was diagnosed with Lyme Disease, and discovered that she had a hole in her heart. On top of that, Alleigh was also dealing with fainting spells and seizures. After several years of dealing with these conditions, Alleigh was tired of sitting still. She decided it was time to return to athletics, and there was no better stage for her comeback then the Boston Marathon.

Getting Prepared:

Alleigh has combined several beginner marathon plans that she found online, and has also received advice from her college cross country coach. She has been running 13-20 miles during  the work week, along with an additional long run each weekend. She’s also working on her strength training by rock climbing once a week, and is focused on staying healthy (a good thing sine Boston no longer allows runners to defer) by using the foam roller, icing and stretching.

Some background on HINT Water: HINT Unsweetened Essence Water, a popular choice among athletes looking to stay hydrated and healthy, is happy to support runners of the 2011 Boston Marathon.
