Popular social media hub, Facebook seeks to improve its chat experience by introducing an application that allows users to make free voice calls to their friends.
According to reports, the Mark Zuckerburg lead social media website is preparing to launch a feature for its Messenger app, allowing for these voice calls to be made. Facebook currently allows users to make video calls to friends using their laptops while using its 'Chat' outlet, mimicking Skype's popular model.
Currently, smartphone users in Canada have to option to make free voice calls on their phones through the app and are included in its latest set of updates.
Technology buffs have expressed that Facebook’s latest move represents a shift in the paradigm as the social media website hopes to dominate the social media landscape by taking on the default calling function in mobile phones.
Additionally, this voice calling feature comes simultaneously to another feature tied in to Facebook’s messenger application that allows users to record and send voicemail-type messages to their friends. Users can press and hold a red button where they can record their message and send it as part of their ongoing conversation.
