Facebook to embrace the hashtag

Facebook has been making quite a bit of news lately; privacy concerns, data mining and new designs. The latest Facebook announcement, however, could be one of the biggest changes the company has seen in recent years. Reports are that Facebook is about to adopt the hashtag from rival twitter.

Facebook has over 1 billion users, and while Twitter only has approximately 500 million, there's something about the hashtag that is not only addicting, but apparently valuable. On twitter, putting a hashtag before a word allows that word, and your tweet, to become indexed based on that word. Especially, it tags your tweet to that word, and that word to your tweet.

If Facebook is truly going to do this, it's going to have to figure out some logistics though. Facebook-owned Instagram also allows users to use hashtags to attach to their pictures. Figuring out how all those hashtags will work will be one of their main goals moving forward with this project.

One thing is for sure though; Facebook is slowly inching towards some of the better features of Twitter.
