Facebook's big announcement and search tool is finally announced, Facebook Graph Search.

First there was Google, YouTube, Twitter, and now Facebook Graph Search. This is exciting to see Facebook now become a more relevant local search platform for users with their inter-connectivity of Facebook, with over one billion members and over one trillion connections. The power of consumer information and using their data.

So, What is Facebook Graph Search? My definition is this is Facebook’s new way to connect people and things. Their name can be a little deceptive because it doesn't mean that you will see a visual graphical representation of what you're searching for.

Examples:

The new Facebook Graph Search will enable people to search for what other people do, think and like. For example, you could ask Facebook Graph Search to show you:

  • “People living in Troy, Michigan who like Yoga”
  • “The favorite movies of Females living in Detroit”
  • “Which Greek restaurants in Detroit friends of my friends like”
  • “The Electricians your friends like”
  • “Delicatessens in Detroit that Employees of OEM Automotive companies like”
  • “Photographs of Lake St. Clair taken by friends”
  • “People who play golf and live near me and are over thirty years old”

Of course the results come from information on Facebook – information not presently public to other search engines like Google, Yahoo, and Bing. This will be another great example and source of local search information presented in a totally new way.

Now how does this impacts businesses? Facebook now is even more important place on which to focus your business marketing efforts. I am always amazed when talking to business owners how many businesses don't yet have a Facebook page. Ask yourself this, would your business go without a website? If you don't have a business fan page, you can't get liked, and if you don't get liked, you aren't going to be ranking in Facebook Graph Search.

Friends recommendations to friends is very credible and powerful that it can hardly be ignored, especially when it comes to the marketing of intangibles. When we want an electrician, lawyer, doctor, plumber, insurance broker, realtor, therapist, or any one of hundreds of service providers we almost always ask around our friends for recommendation. Facebook Graph Search will give you access to the likes of many more people than just your immediate connections.

Let's say you wake in the morning and your car will not start, You go to your computer, Facebook Graph Search for “car repairs in my area that friends and friends of friends like,” and you will get an instant and valuable recommendation.

Now what if you were the business and owned the car repair facility. With the new Facebook service, it's critical to gain search that you have a Facebook presence and also that you encourage people to like you on Facebook.

It's going to be just as important for people selling goods and services. Imagine someone who wants to know which phone their friends like best? You'd better be sure your offering has a great, active Facebook page.

It is extremely likely, no pun intended, the Facebook global community will utilize this new and flexible search tool for local search. So start building your Facebook presence right now. Think of it like a business you visit, not having a Facebook presence is like not having a shop with a sign outside, no display window, and no doorway to enable customers to get inside to buy your goods and service.
