Facebook iOS update includes free calling

Facebook has released an update for its iOS mobile app that enables members to make free phone calls to their friends. The feature, that is currently available only the in U.S. and Canada uses a member’s existing data plan.

This latest update comes fresh off the heels of the previous update released just weeks ago that included in-app video recording that can be shared with friends and voice messaging that compliments the standalone app Messenger, that’s available for both iOS and Android platforms and allows a member to make a free voice over internet (VoIP) phone call, although data usage fees may be incurred.

In version 5.5, Facebook members no longer have to use Messenger and instead, can make phone calls by going to a friend’s profile and tap on the message button. On the next screen, the user must then tap on the “i” button at the top right of the screen. When the newest screen appears, there will be a Free Call button.

While the new Free Call feature seems like a step in the right direction, users must be wary of overages on their respective data plans. By adding photos, smiley faces and other images, a member’s next month’s phone bill could be an unpleasant surprise unless they’re savvy.
