Facebook introduces new 'Listen With Friends' feature

Last Thursday, Facebook rolled out a new feature allowing users to enjoy the same music as their friends and family, from the comfort of their own profile.

"You can listen to the same song, at the exact same time—so when your favorite vocal part comes in you can experience it together, just like when you're jamming out at a performance or dance club," said Alexandre Roche, Product Designer, on the Facebook Blog.

Dubbed "Listen With Friends," the new feature displays a music note in the chat sidebar and/or story ticker that shows a user who, among their friends, is listening to music. To join the party, the user just needs to hover over the name and click the "Listen With (Friend's Name)" button that appears.

"Listen With Friends" also comes with a group chat room feature, which allows up to 50 friends to discuss the songs they are enjoying — with one person acting as a DJ.

Note that you must use the same music player as your friends (currently only Spotify and Rdio) to be able to listen to their music.

"Only the people you've shared your listening activity with can see when you're listening with a friend," says the Facebook Help Center. "You can control privacy settings in music apps when you install the app or on your App Settings page after you've installed the app. You can also remove songs you listened to from your timeline on your private activity log."

The new feature will be available to all Facebook users over the next few weeks.
