Facebook hacked by unidentified hacker group; no user data compromised

According to Fox Business News on Feb. 15, social media giant Facebook claims it was the target of hacking by an unidentified hacker group. According to Facebook, no user data was compromised.

"Last month, Facebook security discovered that our systems had been targeted in a sophisticated attack," the company said in a blog post. "The attack occurred when a handful of employees visited a mobile developer website that was compromised. Facebook was not alone in this attack. It is clear that others were attacked and infiltrated recently as well.”

This seems to be happening more and more lately, as Twitter, the microblogging social network, was hacked earlier this month and approximately 240,000 user accounts were potentially compromised. The attackers gained access to user names and email addresses before the attack was disabled.

Major newspaper sites have all been hacked, including The New York Times, The Washington Post and The Wall Street Journal. Those attacks were reportedly engineered by Chinese hackers targeting their coverage of China.

The best way to keep yourself safe on the internet is to vary your passwords and change them regularly. Make them hard to figure out, no “open sesame,” your birthday or logical series of numbers.
