San Francisco, CA: The past few weeks have brought social networking to a brand new low. The administrators of a Facebook group 'Help Save Charlie, the REAL deal,' have publicly called a member 'ignorant slut.'
Lori Scott is a mom who works several jobs and lives with her own rescue pooches. When she became involved with the Charlie Facebook crowd, Lori thought she was aligning herself with others who cared as deeply about animals as she does.
She began posting along with others over the dog Charlie who was taken from owner David Gizzarelli after a horse incident in off leash Chrissy Field dog park. What ensued has become a cyber war between this 'REAL deal' group, David Gizzarelli's page and supporters trying to regain his dog, Charlie and a New Jersey group, the Lexus Project, which raises chip ins.
The trd administrators posted a placard reading 'Charlie loves you…not you David,' prompting several followers to comment. When Scott voiced her disapproval, she was called the vile name, 'ignorant slut.'
"Help save Charlie, the REAL deal K--- K-----, I'm sure the ole gals from Ct would NOT have appreciated.."Lori, you ignorant slut" !!!"
This sort of language and behavior was not new to this page, but Scott was very taken aback and hurt over this abusive attack.
Knowing that at least one person on the group was affiliated with San Francisco Animal Control, Scott wrote to the director, Rebecca Katz. Katz is also a follower of this page and has posted some uncomplimentary untrue items directed at David Gizzarelli and even at American Pit Bull Examiner and Reunion Rescue.
Suspicious were raised regarding ties between the REAL deal group and San Francisco Animal Control when photographs of Charlie began appearing on the REAL deal page.
The director of San Francisco Animal Control responded, but rather than offer an apology, Katz attempted to write off the slur as part of a Saturday Night Live skit.
Katz, "it seems less of a personal insult if it references a sketch that involves debate rather than an attack on you directly."
The director of the city's animal control goes on to accuse David Gizzarelli of "inaccurate and defamatory statements as well as the fraud he has committed on those who donate to him. I was advised that he has free speech rights and that those who donate do so at their own peril/foolishness. Thus, I can only give you the same feedback: these people have free speech rights. As much as you and I may not like what they say, evidently we cannot stop them."
The statement from Rebecca Katz goes on to defend her volunteer and anyone else who posts on the REAL deal page.
"I cannot control what she does on her own time. To do so would infringe on her 1st amendment rights. I have cautioned her about what she writes per your request."
"Thus, I can only give you the same feedback: these people have free speech rights."
Free speech is one thing, but ugly name-calling is something altogether different. These words might have been funny back in the 70's uttered on television by Dan Ackroyd, but what has happened time and again on the REAL deal page is serious and poisonous.
Certainly our forefathers didn't have this kind of hurtful garbage in mind when writing the constitution. When Scott attempted to reason with this group, her attempt was greeted with yet another comedy skit from Saturday Night Live.

Someday, and hopefully soon, these people might look at their comments and offer an apology. While waiting, it's unknown where Charlie is even located. Gizzarelli has not received reply from his countless attempts to contact Katz and SFACC. This group continues to post mean items directed at a man they've come to despise en masse and most have probably never met in person. The hostility has grown like mutant virus engulfing anyone who disagrees with their operation.
Lori Scott became a victim of the REAL deal Facebook group as have others who've dared to differ with their agenda. Maybe Katz, SFACC and it's volunteers along with the rest of the followers on Help Save Charlie, the REAL deal Facebook page find humor in hurting innocent people by posting awful slurs and character assassination, but some of us aren't laughing.
