According to a report on MCVita, it looks like the impressive popularity of Facebook as a casual gaming platform is starting to wither. New research from IHS Screen Digest Media now suggests that while 50% of Facebook users played games provided on the social networking platform in 2009 and 2010, that number has now dropped to 25%, or half of its previous amount.
The report cites the rise of the smartphone as one possible factor that is contributing to the sinking popularity of Facebook games. The casual audience, almost by definition, is a fickle one that moves from one fashionable trend to the next. In the same way that the audience for the Wii has dwindled and moved on, it looks like the same massive numbers that fueled Facebook game developement have similarly grown tired.
