Facebook blocks a mom who posted photos of herself breastfeeding her baby in a group that she created on the site. On April 6, Travelers Today reported that Facebook decided to censor Christie Kemp and her group, flagging the photos as "inappropriate." Naturally this has caused outrage and sparked debate across the internet today.
"It's not right. I'm trying to do good for mothers and I'm getting kicked off for posting pictures of the most beautiful act a mother can do for their kid," explained Kemp. According to Facebook, the breastfeeding photos violate their "pornographic material and sexually explicit content" policy.
The Facebook blocks mom topic has also gotten the attention of several celebrities who have spoken out about the difference between breastfeeding and sexually explicit content. To many people, the two don't even belong in the same category. While Facebook has since apologized to Kemp and re-activated her account, they stand by their policy.
"Photos which contain a fully exposed breast do violate out terms and may be removed if they are reported to us," the company said in a statement. While they acknowledge that breastfeeding is "natural," they stand by their decision to flag nudity that violates their policy.
Should the mom have been blocked from Facebook for her breastfeeding photos? Sound off in the comments below.
