Facebook and Twitter help raise breast cancer awareness in KC

Thanks to social media influences, Breast Cancer Awareness Month is gaining more attention than ever. Facebook and Twitter not only inform worldwide audiences about events and facts concerning breast cancer, but these sites are also great at targeting local audiences.

The Greater Kansas City branch of the Susan G. Komen for the Cure organization gives updates on both their Twitter and Facebook pages. It is full of links to articles about treatments and early awareness, along with localized information.

For instance, the Twitter page links to an article where NBC Action News interviews a local breast cancer survivor. The Facebook page currently has multiple links about what Kansas City-ians can do to impact breast cancer research, such as the power of their legislatures and how to contact them.

Facebook is the best place to find local events. This is no exception during Breast Cancer Awareness Month. This year, the American Cancer Society is holding an event called Making Strides Against Breast Cancer in Kansas City. On Saturday, October 29th 2011, people are invited to walk for breast cancer to raise awareness and donations. This has been an annual event since 2009 and all of the information about the walk can be found here.
