'Face Off' recap: Three heads are better than two

Tuesday's "Face Off" saw two major firsts for the Syfy series: one team created the biggest makeup ever, and judge Glenn Hetrick actually... smiled. While the season's frontrunner thus far has been Anthony, it wasn't his creation that prompted the notoriously tough judge's emotional breakthrough, so it's fair to say the race has tightened.

With guest judge Bryan Singer, the director of X-men films and the recent "Jack: Slayer of Giants" film, it was a no-brainer the contestants would be creating giants, with the stipulation they must have at least two heads. Of course, when you're trying to impress, why just make two heads when you can make three?

All but two teams pushed for three heads, with one team barely able to get their two done. Meagan and Jenna struggled with Jenna's limited use of her hands, with their giant crashing and burning when their cowl headpiece failed and they had to put the second head on the belly.

To her credit, Jenna stepped up and owned responsibility for pulling the overall effort down, albeit through no fault of her own. And as such, she was sent home this week.

"I think this is the best thing, as much as it breaks my heart," she responded when the judges delivered the bad news.

But on to the happy stuff, the good ones.

Anthony and Autumn managed to blend their work together in a seamless creation -- not only thanks to Anthony's skill in makeup, but in managing his partner in crime, and as he put it, "let(ting) her think she has more control than she really does." If that sounds bad, just look at the gummy bear from last week (hint: it looks like a cat and has a hot pink disco wig.)

Trust me, he was justified.

But it was Eric F. and Kris who stole the show this week, with their huge double-headed giant, towering over the model who it appeared to be holding in its hands. At around 10 feet tall, it clocked in as the biggest makeup ever on the show and as the judges came in for a closer look after presentation, what was that look on Hetrick's face? Could that have been... why, yes, I believe it was... a smile. On Hetrick's face.

If you can make that man smile, it's game on.

Let's hope that's the last of the tam challenges, because we really want to see this group work on their own and let the best rise to the top. Kris is showing his win last week was no fluke and is coming on strong, but it's still Anthony and Eric F. in the front on this race, with the two seeming to push each other on.
