The final round of voting for MLB Network’s “Face of MLB” begins today, Monday, and goes on throughout the week with the winner being announced Friday, 9:00 am EST. Every team in Major League Baseball had a player in the running when the voting began, but one by one the contenders were eliminated until only the two finalists remain: Cincinnati Reds first baseman Joey Votto and Los Angeles Dodgers outfielder Matt Kemp.
During the course of the competition Joey Votto has gone up against, and handily defeated, the likes of Minnesota Twins’ Joe Mauer, Toronto Blue Jays’ Jose Bautista, New York Yankees’ Derek Jeter and most recently Pittsburgh Pirates’ Andrew McCutchen.
Being on the west coast where fans may still be asleep when voting begins, Matt Kemp has had to come from behind at times. However Kemp still managed to triumph over his “Face of MLB” opponents Seattle Mariners’ Felix Hernandez, Chicago Cubs’ Starlin Castro, Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim’s Mike Trout, and lastly Atlanta Braves’ Jason Heyward.
Matt Kemp was actually down by 80 percent to Jason Heyward before Dodgers fans rallied and put him on top in the semi-final round. Currently Joey Votto is leading Matt Kemp, but it is still early, and given Kemp’s comeback potential, Cincinnati Reds fans can’t afford to take a break if they want Votto to finish on top.
Voting for the “Face of MLB” is simple – it’s all done on Twitter. To vote for your favorite in the finals you just include their hashtag in a tweet (#joeyvotto or #mattkemp). Fans can vote repeatedly, but get credit for only one vote per tweet, and re-tweets count as votes as well.
Given the winner is determined solely by fan support, the competition not only determines the “Face of MLB” but also seems to indicate which team has the most dedicated fan base willing to tediously tweet the path to victory.
