In 2010, Glacier National Park, Montana, will mark 100 years as part of the national park system. With a landscape millions of years in the making, increasing concerns are being voiced about how quickly the park's glaciers are melting (U.S. News & World Report.)

On August 19, 2009, the Face of America: Glacier National Park kicks off  the Centennial celebration at the Filene Center, Wolf Trap National Park for the Performing Arts, Vienna, Virginia. Wolf Trap's unique Face of America series is part of a mission to support other national parks around the country, using the performing arts to celebrate the diversity of America's national treasures.

The program for Face of America: Glacier National Park celebration includes:

  • The world premiere of The Sun Road, by choreographer Trey McIntyre, a live performance ballet that will be integrated with HD video of work filmed on location in Glacier National Park. The video is shown on giant screens behind the live performers on stage. (Preview below.)
  • Performances by Montana artists, including Jack Gladstone and Rob Quist, and pianist Philip Aaberg
  • The Premiere Dinner, with Governor Schweitzer, Senators Baucus and Tester, and Congressman Rehberg will serving as honorary co-hosts

According to the Glacier National Park Fund Face of America brochure, Trey McIntyre, one of the most sought-after choreographers working today, has said about this project: “One of the things that strikes you immediately about Glacier is the sense of scale. There is a feeling that’s somehow almost painful about looking into an expanse like that. The beauty is so overwhelming…. I hope the piece will add something to [the audience’s] world view about global warming and help the preservation of our planet remain in the forefront of their thinking."
