Food trucks in Marina del Rey have one simple motto: Gourmet or go home! Every Thursday night, six to 10 trucks descend on what locals affectionately call 'Mother's Beach'. Some of the regular rollers include Haute Burgers, Rolll'n Lobster, Rock'n Lou's Pizza and Pallazzolo's Artisan Gelato.
Before the trucks arrive, small crowds start to gather for this weekly culinary ritual. The topic of conversation: which truck has the best burger, burrito, barbecue or banana cream pie... each foodie hoping their favorite chef-on-four-wheels made the trek.
So, what's the dish on these beach bites? It's truly gourmet all the way! Gone are the days of basic burgers and flavorless fries for hungry beach dwellers. Just a few of the offerings from these rolling chefs include:
- Flyin Hawaiian Sliders with pulled chicken, crispy Maui onions and chipotle aoile
- Angus Beef Slider with applewood bacon, caramelized onions and Gorgonzola cheese
- 'White Pizza' with imported cheeses, fresh basil and garlic
- Artisan gelatos like banana caramel praline, white chocolate raspberry and blueberry merlot
The food trucks are parked at 4101 Admiralty Way every Thursday from 5 p.m. - 9 p.m. Key points of reference: Directly across from the Marriott Hotel and about 50 yards from the Cheesecake Factory. The food is designed to eat while walking (check out the cheesy pizzas gently rolled into snow cone cups). There are also lots of benches and, of course, the beach to enjoy these truck-alicious bites.
The trucks are scheduled to go on hiatus at the end of September as the weather cools and the crowds thin. But, rumor has it Los Angeles County may extend their stay due to public demand. No doubt, loyal food truck followers will be waiting with baited garlicky breath.
