If vibrant, humorous, functional and affordable are must haves in your home or closet, then you will be in stitches over a new South African virtual boutique launching October 21, 2013. The collection finds its roots in Africa’s rich and colorful history.
Fab, an e-commerce design store founded in 2011, travels the world looking for emerging, undiscovered designers, whose philosophy mirrors their own; creating authentic, hand-made designs of superior quality. This attention to detail also has positive effects in these emerging communities by creating new job and income opportunities.
A cocktail party was held at the South African General Consulate yesterday in New York City, to celebrate the launch of Fab’s new design collection. I caught up with founder and Chief Design Officer, Bradford Shellhammer, and asked what makes this line so unique. “There is a vibrant art scene going on in South Africa. The new government will only be 20 years old, and there is a sense of this modern and newness that is being combined with the old traditions of handcrafted, labor-intensive workmanship. It is the perfect marriage of modern and clean, influenced by deep, ingrained traditions.” Fab is also proud to debut a collection that speaks to their accessible approach to design, while benefiting globally significant causes.
Fab says they are the alternative to big box stores like Walmart and Target where everything is mass-produced, and virtually, the same. Some one of a kind items you will never find in said box stores include, a signature statement piece necklace made out of 9,000 glass beads, took 23 hours to make, and is priced at $135. Other affordable faves, silk-screened by hand, quirky and colorful umbrellas and bow ties, affordably priced at $45 and $15 respectively.
Sounds like it’s time to start making a list and checking it twice! Visit fab.com for unique fashion, jewelry and accessories for the home. The South African pop-up boutique will be available online October 21. It will showcase a wide array of items including, hats, bags, textiles, home décor, and furniture among other unique, modern designs that help brighten lives all over the globe.
