"Extreme Weight Loss" star Chris Powell said under-eating and drastically cutting carbs are two diet mistakes that inhibit weight loss.

"Undereating and carb depletion are two major misconceptions I want to remedy," Powell told Starpulse. "Many of the folks that we work with, they already have an unhealthy relationship with food. Most of them, they think they've got to eat less and exercise more. It's really easy for people to undereat."

Chris is not a fan of low-carb diets, saying they work in the short term but can backfire over the long haul, resulting in stalled weight loss or rebound weight gain.

"Whenever anybody's trying to lose weight, if they haven't done their proper research, most people just through advertising and media, they go 'Oh, I'm going to cut carbs,'" said Powell. "That's definitely got to be one of the biggest misconceptions."

Instead, Chris advocates carb-cycling, or alternating between days of high-carb intake and low-carb intake, to keep your body guessing and your metabolism fired up.

On his carb-cycling diet plan, you can eat 1,200 calories on a low-carb day, 1,500 calories on a high-carb day and up to 2,400 calories on a cheat day.

Powell detailed his rapid weight-loss plan in his NY Times bestseller, Choose to Lose: The 7-Day Carb Cycle Solution. His carb-cycling daily menu looks like this:

  • Eat five meals.
  • Eat a high-carb breakfast that includes both protein and carbs within 30 minutes of waking.
  • Eat your remaining four meals, either high-carb or low-carb, every three hours.
  • Drink a gallon of water a day.

Chris also advocates daily workouts, but said if you're not a regular exerciser, start off by doing something five minutes a day.

"It can be anything from running around the block, or just marching in place when you're watching television," said Powell, who also wrote Choose More, Lose More. "When it comes to creating a lifestyle of fitness, we need to start out small. We need to focus on something attainable that everyone can do."

Powell said he continues to be inspired by the incredible transformations and compelling personal stories of the people he helps on his show. "They never cease to amaze us," he said.
