In the worst weather conditions
Even in the worst weather conditions our pets need exercise. Our recent snow proved to be no match for the folks who maintain the Scioto Trail along the east bank of the Scioto River at the Whittier Peninsula. This trail is located adjacent to the new Scioto Audubon Metro Park & Grange Insurance Audubon Center.
At the height of snowfall
As you can see, even with the recent snowfall, this trail was maintained. The Scioto Trail along the east bank offers a spectacular view of the riverfront in a setting that almost enables one to forget they are in the middle of a city. Perfect for a long walk with the family pet or for a quick trip to stretch the paws.
This is a multi purpose paved trail close to downtown, excellent for cyclists who want to cover some territory or cross over to an adjacent trail system. Bird watchers will appreciate the diverse populations and numerous species, which have increased in recent years; this area is a key location for birds migrating from Central and South America. People working downtown can hit this trail for a quick stretch at lunchtime, and the center is suited for families as well as individuals seeking information and recreation. The trail and urban park contain wetlands, walking trails, and a new environmental education center.
To get to the park, from I-71, exit Greenlawn Avenue, head east, turn left on Front St. (just past Berliner park after you cross the bridge), Go to W. Whittier St. (the first traffic light) and turn left. The Scioto Park entrance is on the left, just over the bridge. The Grange Insurance Audubon Center is further down the road, taking up much of the renovated Peninsula.
Please remember to keep your pet on a leash and pick up after your pet; this area is a protected wetland.
