'Extreme Rules' promises great matches for WWE's new young stars

WWE has almost became a new promotion since the events of “Wrestlemania XXX” so with “Extreme Rules” just days away, it seems the first momentous card after the big changes of WWE’s top annual show is upon us. New stars look to cement their place even as established veterans seek to slow their momentum. Check out this rundown of the card and the Examiner’s predictions before tuning into the show on WWE Network or pay-per-view on Sunday, May 4.

The show features a double main event. First, WWE World Heavyweight Champion Daniel Bryan will defend his title after several brutal beatings against the newly re-masked Kane. Kane has been a complete monster since he put his mask back on, but Bryan has shown he can beat any odds when he won the title. This Extreme Rules contest promises to be brutal. Prediction: Daniel Bryan retains.

In a potential six-man masterpiece, the reunited Evolution goes up against the red-hot members of The Shield in the other main event. The Shield has been a foil in Triple H’s side for two months now, but WWE’s onscreen Chief Operation Officer will make his second straight pay-per-view appearance alongside Randy Orton and Batista as he seeks to take out Dean Ambrose, Seth Rollins and Roman Reigns. To quote Jim Ross, “this one will be a slobberknocker.” Prediction: The Shield show their dominance.

John Cena also continues his feud with Bray Wyatt at “Extreme Rules”. Cena beat Wyatt at “Wrestlemania XXX” but Wyatt’s mind games have seriously played against Cena in recent weeks. Expect a lot of refrains of “He’s got the whole world in his hands” when the two men meet again, this time in a steel cage. Prediction: Bray Wyatt will even up the series with a victory after interference by the rest of the Wyatt Family.

Bad News Barrett moved past eight men to become the number one contender to Big E. Langston. With all that momentum behind him, it would be a surprise to see the former Nexus leader do anything but win the title. Of course, anything can happen in WWE and this might just be the beginning of something bigger for Barrett. Prediction: Bad News Barrett becomes the new Intercontinental champion.

Rounding out the card:

  • The Divas title is on the line as Tamina Snuka challenges recently crowned champion Paige. Prediction: Paige retains.
  • Cesaro gets a chance to follow up on his big battle royal win as he faces off with Rob Van Dam and Jack Swagger in a triple threat match. Prediction: Jack Swagger gets the win when a new Real American makes his debut.
  • R-Truth and Xavier Woods face off with Alexander Rusev in a handicap match designed to make “The Bulgarian Brute” look even more dominant. Prediction: Alexander Rusev remains dominant.
  • On the pre-show, the feud between Hornswoggle and El Torito finally comes to a head in the first ever “WeeLC” match. Expect a lot of Tables Ladders & Chairs in this one, only smaller than usual. Prediction: El Torito gets the win and sets up a continued push for his stable.
