A special new exhibit at the Shedd aquarium are the Jellies, formerly known as jellyfish, these translucent creatures have no bones, no brains and no blood. Yet they can detect prey and travel thousand of miles drifting in the Ocean's currents. Jellies that have stinging testicles and sting humans very with the effects of the sting depending upon the person they touch, Some people feel nothing more then an itch while others may require medical treatment.
The current exhibit opened in the summer of 2011 and was originally scheduled to run through May 2012 but on May 7, 2012 a decision was made that due to popular demand the Jellies exhibit would be extended through 2014. Many different species of jellies are featured throughout the exhibit. Jellies included are Atlantic Sea Nettle, Lion's Mane, Moon Jelly, Northeast Pacific Sea Nettle, Spotted Lagoon Jelly, Umbrella Jelly, and the Upside-down Jelly
The Lion's mane jelly can grow up to 120 ft long while Nomura Jellies can have a bell of up to 79 inches and weigh in at 330lbs. The tiniest jellies arerukandji jellyfish are very small with a bell about 5 millimetres to 25 millimetres wide (or wider) and four long tentacles, which range in length from just a few centimetres up to 3.3ft in length. These are some of the most lethal jellies in the world.
Jellies can be found in Fresh water, Salt water, along the coastlines and in the deep sea.
This close-up look gives visitors a chance to see into the mysterious world of Sea and Ocean dwelling jellies and learn more about them.
