Dr. Mehmet Oz, author of "YOU: On A Diet Revised Edition: The Owner's Manual for Waist Management," has gained a reputation for featuring weight loss "miracle" supplements almost every week. And two of them, garcinia cambogia and green coffee bean extract, continue to be marketed by many supplement companies. But do they really work? Should you try them? We investigate.
Garcinia cambogia is "the newest, fastest fat buster," proclaimed Dr. Oz on his show.
How it works: The natural extract of the plant, hydroxycitric acid (HCA), reportedly blocks your appetite. Some experts say that it can boost your weight loss. One study revealed that those taking it lost four pounds a month.
Beware if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, said Catherine Ulbricht, senior pharmacist at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston and co-founder of Natural Standard Research Collaboration, which reviews evidence on herbs and supplements. However, in its favor, “some studies have shown that HCA stops an enzyme that turns sugar into fat,” added Catherine.
Look for a product that contains HCA and has no fillers, and talk with your doctor before trying it. Examples of products with HCA include NatureWise Garcinia Cambogia, 500 mg, Natural Appetite Suppressant and Weight Loss Supplement, 180 Vegetarian Capsules and 75% HCA Garcinia Cambogia Fat Burner.
What about related products? Dr. Oz also has discussed green coffee bean extract as another weight loss "miracle." The product contains chlorogenic acid. Dr. Oz says: "Various studies have suggested that chlorogenic acid slows absorption of fat from food intake and also activates metabolism of extra fat." In studies, dieters lost a pound a week using the supplement without changing their diet.
If you look for a green coffee bean supplement, it should contain the chlorogenic acid extract, which can be listed as any of the following:
- GCA® (green coffee antioxidant): Example - NatureWise Green Coffee Bean Extract 800 with GCA Natural Weight Loss Supplement .
- Svetol®: Example - Sports Research Green Coffee Bean
If you are going to take green coffee bean, the recommended dosage is 400 mg, three times a day – 30 minutes before each meal. However, some clinical trials have also demonstrated success with 200 mg.
Dr. Oz also has talked about yacon syrup, which has been shown to result in more than a pound a week of fat loss without making any other changes. We tried it ourselves.
It tastes like molasses, and can be used to sweeten tea or plain Greek yogurt. Try a teaspoon before meals to see if it helps you eat less. Look for pure yacon syrup, such as Quality Encapsulations or Royal Dark.
