On the Big Island, just twelve miles north of Hilo in Honomu, you will find Akaka Falls State Park. The park is home to two large waterfalls that are easily accessible on foot.

The park has a meandering .4 mile loop trail that will take you to both Akaka Falls and the smaller Kahuna Falls. Along the path to both waterfalls, you will spot other smaller waterfalls, wild ginger, tall groves of bamboo, and a variety of other stunning tropical foliage.

Visit Kahuna Falls first to really appreciate it. It is partially obscured and is less stunning than Akaka Falls, but it is still worth taking the time to visit. The foliage in the area surrounding Kahuna Falls may even be more beautiful than the waterfall itself.

After viewing Kahuna Falls, continue walking on the trail to reach Akaka Falls. You will be walking on the ridge above the Kolekole Stream. You will see the top of the falls before you even reach the viewing area.
As you approach the viewing area of Akaka Falls, you will immediately notice the long 442 foot drop to the bottom of the falls. The plunging water gracefully lands in the large pool below the falls.

After viewing Akaka Falls, continue your walk on the loop trail through the rainforest while soaking in all of the beauty that surrounds you. Don’t fret if it is raining or overcast during your visit. Rain is what makes these waterfalls so spectacular! These waterfalls are yet another reminder of the awesome power of Mother Nature.

To get here: Drive north on Highway 190 towards the Hamakua Coast for 11 miles. Turn left off the highway to reach the sleepy village of Honomu. Turn right after passing the row of shops in Honomu, and drive for 5 miles until you reach the end of the road at Akaka Falls State Park.
