Explore the fascinating world of Pierre-Auguste Renoir with educator Joan Jacobs

Pierre-Auguste Renoir is widely regarded as one of the leaders of the Impressionist movement. His paintings reveal a world of beauty and happiness, filled with the light of an eternal summer, intoxicating color, swaying dancers and luminous nudes. But more, works like Bal au Moulin de la Galette, Monmartre (which collector Ryoei Saito purchased in 1990 for $78 million, the sixth highest price ever paid for a painting) and Luncheon of the Boating Party reflect the changing character of French society in the late 19th century, a period given over to glamour, decadence and the celebration of even the ordinary events of Parisian life.

This is the fascinating world into which popular art educator and lecturer Joan Jacobs delves when she presents Renoir Part I: Impressionist. It is the fourth class in Art Talk, an exciting series of art lectures that are part of the Phil’s Lifelong Learning arts education program. The lecture will be presented on Tuesday, February 28 at 10 a.m. in the Daniels Pavilion at the Philharmonic Center for the Arts.

Jacobs’ presentations reflect her extensive travels throughout the United States and Europe and are complemented by her wealth of museum-quality images that enrich the lectures and enhance students’ learning experience. Each program includes a question-and-answer session.

The series includes two additional lectures:

  • Renoir Part II: Road to Success on March 6; and
  • Renoir Part III: Official Recognition on March 20.

Tickets to Renoir Part I: Impressionist are $40.
